O piosence

For twenty years she only nodded to the neighbour on the stairs. But every evening at nine an old piano came through her kitchen wall, the same slow piece with the same wrong note in the same place, and she pulled her chair up to listen. Now she lives in a new flat with double glass, and the quiet keeps her awake. She wrote to the flat next to her old one, to someone whose name she never learned.

Night 15. Lamp 15 is lit in the yard of a block of flats near the gate. At nine I pressed my lantern to the wall she wrote about and heard nothing. I cannot play the piano. I sang the piece instead, with the wrong note in it, because that is the version she knows.

Play it on a night a new place is too quiet, or send it to a neighbour you only know by sound. Tell us your city in the comments, and Lampwright will see your light.

Zwrotka 1

We only nodded on the stairs

I pulled my chair up to the wall

Every night the same wrong note
every night I held my breath
then the world was ri-ight

Zwrotka 2

I've got a flat with double glass
the clock is louder than the street
at nine I tap the wall for you
and nothing plays, and I can't sleep

Twenty years and not one word
only that one tune
let me hear it no-o-ow

Refren

Play it through the wa-a-all
with the wrong note and all
play it through the wall
and then I'll know I'm home

They played it in the station hall
a stranger's hands, so clean and sure
it never missed the note you missed
that's how I knew it wasn't you

with the wrong note and all
play it through the wall
