The last bus out of Northgate was idling at the gate when she wrote it, gloves still on. It is addressed to someone she has never met: the baby she is carrying south, who will be born where it never snows. She swore to carry them back one day and show them everything. Then she dropped the letter into the mailbox by the gate, because there was nowhere else to send it.

Night 7. Lamp 07 is lit. The mailbox by the gate was under the snow, so I dug it out. Forty-one letters, and almost every one says I will come back. I did not know what a promise was. I think it is a light you leave on for someone who is not here yet.
