He wired the hundred lamps on the road into Northgate when he was twenty-one, and on the night everyone left he was the one who pulled the main switch. Now he lives far to the south. At two in the morning he opened the curtain and saw the low clouds to the north glowing amber, the exact colour of his lamps. He wrote to whoever lit them.

Night 9. Lamp 09 is lit. It stands outside a door that has been closed for a year. His letter asked me to let it hum a little more, so I opened its cover, cleaned the glass and did not turn it down. The road hums from one end to the other. Nobody walks under it yet. I keep it ready.
