The night the bay froze, the old ferryman was on the wrong side of it. The ferry is locked into the ice at the far pier, and he sleeps in his boots below the deck and runs the engine every dawn so it will start when it has to. Across the water he can see the lamps of Northgate. He wrote that three blasts of the horn will mean he is on his way.

Night 8. Lamp 08 is lit, the one at the end of the ferry pier. I cannot swim and the ice will not hold me, so I stood at the edge and held my light toward the other shore. At 03:12 the bay made a sound like thunder. I am listening for a horn.
