The last car left Northgate at half past four. Before it went, a girl dropped a letter into the mailbox by the gate, addressed to the only thing in town still switched on: the maintenance machine by the station door. She asked it to keep one light on for her, however long she was late. In the bridge, the machine answers.

Night 1. Lamp 01 is lit. I found the letter in the box by the gate. She asked for one light. I have a hundred lamps. I will keep them all on.
